R-Type DX – Collector’s Edition (GBC)

R-Type DX Collector’s Edition (GBC) is a new physical reprint of the 1999 Game Boy Color compilation, from Limited Run Games and Retro-Bit. Pre-orders open Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at noon ET.

What’s in the Collector’s Edition
$45 and includes:

• Cosmic cartridge that works on original Game Boy and Game Boy Color
• Five games on one cart: R-Type and R-Type II in both original monochrome and color-enhanced versions, plus DX mode (both games chained into one long run)
• Numbered deluxe hardcover cartridge packaging
• Full-color instruction manual

Separate soundtrack releases are also planned:

CD — $20 (Music Encore + original BGM tracks, plus an interview with producer Nobuhiro Yoshikawa)
Vinyl — $30 (same two soundtrack sets on a “Cosmic” record)

What the original game is
R-Type DX (Bits Studios / Nintendo, June 1999 NA) is a GBC compilation of the Game Boy ports of R-Type and R-Type II, plus a color-enhanced pass and the combined DX/Ultimate Challenge mode. It’s still one of the best-regarded portable shmups: color overhaul, autofire options, stage select, battery-backed progress, and surprisingly readable action on the small screen. Some arcade stages were cut to fit the handheld.

Original CIB copies currently sit around the $70 range; sealed/new is higher. That’s why a $45 official reprint is notable.

A separate modern port, R-Type DX: Music Encore (City Connection), already launched digitally in 2026 on Switch/PS4/Xbox/PC with extra music, rewind, and QoL. This LRG/Retro-Bit release is the actual GBC cartridge reprint for original hardware.
