Steam Machine Price Leak?

A recent price leak for Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine (the revived living-room PC/console hybrid running SteamOS, announced in November 2025) surfaced on January 9, 2026, and it’s got gamers talking — mostly in disappointment.

The leak originated from Czech retailers like Smarty.cz (and reportedly Alza.cz), where backend source code on product listings revealed estimated prices (in Czech Koruna, converted to USD):

  • 512GB model: Around $950 (pre-tax)
  • 2TB model: Around $1,070 (pre-tax)

These figures quickly spread across tech sites, Reddit, and X, with many comparing it unfavorably to current consoles like the PS5 Pro (~$700) or Xbox Series X (~$500–$600), or even high-end phones like the iPhone 17 Pro (~$1,099).

Important Context and Caveats
This isn’t an official Valve announcement — far from it. Here’s why it’s not confirmed and likely inflated:

  • Valve sells its hardware (like the Steam Deck) directly through the Steam store, avoiding third-party markups. These Czech sites aren’t official partners for the Steam Machine yet, and they often add hefty premiums (e.g., Steam Deck models sell for 20–30% more there than Valve’s direct US pricing).
  • Some analysts estimate the real US MSRP could be $150–$200 lower after accounting for markups, import duties, and VAT (Czech prices include ~21% tax). Adjusted guesses put it closer to $750–$900 for the higher-end model.
  • Retailers frequently use placeholder or speculative prices in code before official details drop, especially with ongoing global issues like the DRAM/RAM shortage (driven by AI demand), which has spiked component costs across the industry and could delay launches or push prices up.

Valve has repeatedly said the Steam Machine won’t be subsidized like traditional consoles (unlike the original Steam Deck, which was priced aggressively). It’s positioned as a compact, powerful PC (with semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU, and more horsepower than most living-room setups), so expect pricing in line with a comparable mini gaming PC rather than a budget console.

Current Status

  • No official pricing or exact release date from Valve yet — just the “early 2026” window (possibly Q1, with some reports hinting at a potential spring delay due to supply chain woes).
  • The Steam Deck page shows no mentions of successors or the Steam Machine.
  • Community reactions range from “I’m out” (too pricey for what it is) to cautious optimism (if it’s truly $700–$800 direct, it could still compete as a hassle-free SteamOS box).

Bottom line: Treat the $950–$1,070 numbers as rumored/inflated estimates for now — the real story will come straight from Valve. If you’re eyeing one, hold off until they drop official details (likely soon, given the timing). What do you think — would you grab one at that price range?
