Nintendo and Sony Pictures are producing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, titled The Legend of Zelda, set for theatrical release on May 7, 2027.
The film is currently in production, with principal photography underway in New Zealand since early November 2025 (starting November 4, wrapping April 7, 2026).
On November 17, 2025—today—Nintendo shared the first official set photos via their app and social media, featuring the leads in costume amid lush landscapes (standing in for Hyrule). Shigeru Miyamoto posted: “Filming is underway… with Bo Bragason-san who will play Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san who will play Link.”
Cast
Bo Bragason: Princess Zelda – Renegade Nell, The Radleys, The Jetty
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth: Link – Pinocchio (Disney live-action), The Haunting of Bly Manor, Son of a Critch
Behind the scenes: Directed by Wes Ball (Maze Runner trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), who aims for a “live-action Hayao Miyazaki” vibe—serious, whimsical, and real-feeling. Produced by Shigeru Miyamoto (Nintendo co-creator) and Avi Arad (Marvel films like Spider-Man, Iron Man). Script by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World). Nintendo is financing over 50%.
Plot details are sparse, but it’s described as: “Link, a young warrior destined to protect… Hyrule from… Ganon, [who] seeks the Triforce.” Costumes nod to Twilight Princess (Link’s tunic) and Breath of the Wild (Zelda’s robes), suggesting a blend rather than a direct adaptation.
